Hello,
"Where people cluster, ideas grow!" Sounds familiar? We are proud
to announce that Lambda Times has taken a significant step in order
to promote this principle. This issue of your favourite newsletter
marks the beginning of a collaboration between OPC and OPTIC (the
Ontario Photonics Technology Industry Cluster, www.optic.on.ca), a
community of high technology companies and organizations working to
support the photonics industry in southern Ontario. Our boundaries
are expanding!
This is an exciting opportunity to stay informed on what is
happening outside of our respective geographical areas. We trust
that you will share our enthusiasm, and that you will take advantage
of this association. It is our goal to make this publication the
best tool to promote, and report on, what is happening in the
Ontarian photonics community. To make this happen, we are always
counting on you: if you have news to spread, events to promote,
articles or white papers to share with the community, do not
hesitate to contact us and we will include it in a future issue.
Finally, in the name of OPC, I would like to wish a warm welcome
to our readers from southern Ontario.
Enjoy the read, Martin Plante - Editor, "Lambda Times"
| A Word from Doug Dykaar, President of
OPTIC |

As President of OPTIC (the Ontario Photonics Technology
Industry Cluster), I'd like to extend my thanks to OPC for the
opportunity of participating in Lambda Times. Sharing news is
a great way to promote closer linkages between our two
clusters. I look forward to hearing about OPC's events and
hope that OPC members will be interested in ours as well. 2004
has been an exciting year for OPTIC. We've seen the
consolidation of a new type of event - OPTIC's 'Company
Visits'. They've been a great success - attracting over 70
people to each one - and have become the prime networking
opportunity for our members.

| Towards Photonics North 2004 (PN 04) - Part
II |
 |
Preparations for PN 04 are moving into high gear, and
the Conference is showing every indication of being the
technical event of the year in Ottawa. By the closing date
(March 15th), 337 abstracts had been submitted - a 50%
increase over OptoCanada. Sponsorships have already been
confirmed by the Embassy of Germany, the Government of
Ontario, DFAIT, Ottawa Global Marketing, Invest-in-Germany,
the University of Arizona, Optiwave, and Bookham. And it is
far from over - a number of others are in the final stages of
negotiation. There is growing interest by associated
organizations in planning events during and around the time of
PN 04. Already confirmed, in addition to the International
Photonics Forum featuring Germany and the PRO Canada-Germany
Student event, are two NATO workshops on Photonics organized
by Vitesse, The Competitiveness Institute's annual conference
organized by OCRI's Ottawa Global Marketing, and a tour of
NRC's CPFC. Still in the planning stages, but likely to take
place, are the first Annual Meeting of the Federation of Asia
Pacific Photonics Industries (FAPPI) and CMC's flagship event,
MR&DCAN. If you haven't done it yet, mark your calendar -
September 27 - 29, 2004!!!

OPC, in collaboration with OPRA/LEOS/NRC, sponsored a
lecture given on March 23rd at the NRC Montreal Road Campus by
Professor Edward (Ted) Sargent, a Canada Research Chair at the
University of Toronto. Ted's talk was titled "Nanotechnology
and Photonics" and covered recent work of himself (including
some soon to be published results) and others at the forefront
of opto- electro research at the nano level.
Nanotechnology harnesses physical phenomena that arise on
the nanometer lengthscale. It seeks to meet the functional
requirements of information technology and communications by
exploiting the regime of quantum confinement of electrons.
Bottom-up nanotechnology implements these functions through
advances in materials chemistry, including natural and
stimulated self-organization. The presentation included some
results from Ted's lab which demonstrate the use of quantum
dots embedded in processible semiconducting polymers to
produce light across the entire optical communications
spectrum. The combination of these materials with
three-dimensionally photon-lengthscale textured materials to
control electrons and photons in tandem was discussed.

| Lambda Times Editorial Board Seeks Your
Help! |
 |
Do you want to stay ahead on the latest and greatest,
while contributing actively to the promotion of photonics in
Ontario? The Lambda Times is seeking an editor for the
upcoming issues. In this position, you collect information
from different sources, review it, do some editing when
required, and put it in a Word document that is sent to
cardcommunications, the firm that takes care of final
formatting and distribution. It is that simple, and only
requires a few hours of your time for each issue (the goal
this year is to release one every 6 weeks). Does the
possibility interest you? Contact Alex Mayman for details.
